An active residence in Japan

A residence for people with special needs in Chiba, Japan.

Jizokai is an existing housing offering and activity centre which not only offers homes and care, but also a wide spectrum of different activities for both residents and people from the surrounding community. Café, restaurant, art gallery and craft workshops are all parts of a creative focus and direction that Jizokai aims to include and integrate. With Njordrum Care's concept of bringing people and nature, interiors and exteriors, residents and the surrounding community closer together through architecture and design, the project becomes a natural continuation of the company's existing DNA.

Founded 27 years ago in Chiba, Japan by the welfare organization Jizo-kai, Sora & Umi is a specialized care and activity center for people with disabilities and special needs. The center originally started with workshops for artistic activities — primarily with a background in traditional Japanese paper — and today manufactures over 100 different types of craft products.

Today, more than 70 people with various special needs work in the workshops of the center. Starting at 9 a.m., the exercise of the day will be followed by activities in one of three workshops, the art gallery and the on-site restaurant. Activities include products in and manufacture of traditional Japanese paper, as well as work with, for example, wood, textiles, ceramics, painting, drawing and cooking. The Center collects and recycles donated, discarded and local resources to best promote and maintain the greatest possible focus on sustainability.
